How to overcome the tightness in the voice?

The tightness in the voice is a problem that accompanies many vocalists. As a rule, the higher the note, the more pinched the voice sounds, and the more difficult it becomes to sing further. The squeezed voice most often sounds like a scream, and this scream translates into what “cics” occur, a voice breaks or, what is called, “a rooster gives”.

This problem is significant for the singer, so getting rid of her is not easy, but as they say, nothing is impossible. So let's talk about how to remove the tightness in your voice?

Physiology

In vocals, as in sports, everything is based on physiology. We must feel physically that we sing correctly. And to sing correctly is to sing freely.

The correct singing position is an open yawn. How to make such a position? Just yawn! You feel that a dome has formed in your mouth, a small tongue is raised, the tongue is relaxed - this is called a yawn. The higher the sound, the more stretch the yawn, but leave the jaw in one position. To sound when singing was free and full, you need to sing in this position.

And yet, do not forget to show everyone your teeth, sing with a smile, that is, make a "bracket", show a fun "smile". Direct the sound through the upper palate, bring it out - if the sound remains inside, it will not sound beautiful in any way. Make sure that the larynx does not rise, and the ligaments are relaxed, do not press on the sound.

A vivid example of the correct position is the performance of Polina Gagarina at Eurovision 2015, watch the video. While singing, Polina can see a small tongue - so much as she opened a yawn, that's why her voice resonates and sounds free, as if her possibilities have no limits.

Hold the bracket and the position of a yawn throughout the singing: both on chanting and in songs. The sound will then become lighter, and you will notice that it has become easier to sing. Of course, the problem will not go away after the first attempt, it is necessary that the new position is fixed and become a habit, the result will not keep you waiting for years.

Exercise

Singing in order to get rid of the tightness in the voice is also based on physiology. When performing exercises, the main thing is to hold the position and bracket.

  • You can sing "Bdey, Bdey, Bde, Bde", "Briya-Briya-Briya-Briya-Bri", "Miya-Miya-Miya-Miya-mi", "Liu-Liu-Liu-Liu-Liu", going down by 5 sounds of tonality, for example: from "g" to "to" in C major. Do not forget to leave the jaw in one position and keep the larynx and ligaments in a free state, while not changing position.
  • Sing "Mi" on the notes do-sol-fa-mi-re-do, remaining in one position on the upper and lower sounds, gradually increase the tonality.
  • High notes are often shouted, so try singing them softly, gradually increasing the power of the sound. If this is the beginning, then freedom came to the voice.
